About The Doners in Canada
Doners in Canada
CALL FOR PHOTOGRAPHS:
Do YOU have old family pictures where only you or your parents know who's in them? Please share them with us all, and preserve them for future generations. Just e-mail me, forward a scanned photo in any format and I will add it to the appropriate place in the tree. Don't be too concerned if the picture is damaged, as some retouching can be done. So, scan those pix and send them on before the information is lost forever!

This family tree project was started by Harold Ford Doner, & carried on by Harry Doner. The amount of work these two men did on all of our behalves is staggering, and we are all in their debt. In an era predating computers and the internet, they rummaged in Archives, dug in Land Offices, and travelled this monstrous gorgeous country simply looking in the phone book for the right surnames before giving them a call.
Harry Doner arrived on my parents' doorstep when I was about 12 years old and had driven from Ontario to B.C. in an old sedan, with his dog and a back seat full of files. A hardcover book was published (The Doners in Canada - Printing House Ltd. Thornhill Ont. 1974) and in Harry and Harold's honour, I continue their tradition by bringing their work into the digital age. Since then I have been updating and keeping it as complete as possible, but need your help.

As of the end of Feb. 2007, there were 14,910 direct descendants (& their spouses) of the first two Doners to settle in Markham 200 years ago. So, I implore you to PLEASE contact me whenever a birth, marriage, death, or special event happens in your family's life, so that it can be preserved for future generations. Photos, old or new, are particularly welcome. What is normal & boring to us today may well be cool & fascinating to our descendants. (Look! It's an actual gasoline-fired automobile!)

Due to genealogy etiquette, information on living persons is not posted on the internet, however you may contact me directly for a family password, about any specific questions you might have, or how you may be related to someone else in the tree.

Getting Around
There are several ways to browse the family tree. The Family View shows the person you have selected in the center, with his/her photo on the left and notes on the right. Above are the father and mother and below are the children. The Ancestor Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph above and children below. On the right are the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents. The Descendant Chart shows the person you have selected in the left, with the photograph and parents below. On the right are the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Your site can generate various Reports for each name in your family tree. You can select a name from the list on the top-right menu bar.

In addition to the charts and reports you have Photo Albums, the Events list and the Relationships tool. Family photographs are organized in the Photo Index. Each Album's photographs are accompanied by a caption. To enlarge a photograph just click on it. Keep up with the family birthdays and anniversaries in the Events list. Birthdays and Anniversaries of living persons are listed by month. Want to know how you are related to anybody ? Check out the Relationships tool.
